Capitals' Gleason expected to play in Game 3

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Washington Capitals defenseman Tim Gleason missed part of practice on Sunday but is expected to play in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round series against the New York Rangers on Monday (7:30 p.m.; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports) Capitals coach Barry Trotz said.

Gleason called the absence a maintenance day but said he was healthy.

"I just had a check up with a doc to see if everything was good and everything’s good," Gleason said.

Trotz would not disclose Gleason's ailment but said he has been blocking a lot of shots, so they’re monitoring his health carefully.

"We have a little bit of a situation [Gleason], but it's minor," Trotz said. "We're just going to be cautious on it."

The Capitals recalled defenseman Nate Schmidt from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League on Sunday in the event that Gleason is unable to play in Game 3.

"[Schmidt] was brought in. …for him to get a feel for a little bit of this series in case of an injury," Trotz said. "He's a guy on defense that would rejoin us. He’s probably going to take the warmup."

Schmidt is not expected to play in Game 3 unless there is a change in Gleason's status.

"He's [Schmidt] on an emergency recall right now until we know for sure," Trotz said. "You could even see him in warmup tomorrow and then we'll make that decision."

Hershey starts the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs against the Hartford Wolf Pack on Wednesday and Schmidt likely will be sent back to Hershey on Tuesday.

"It feels great. It's fun to be back, however long it is," Schmidt said. "Just get a feel for things, take warmups [Monday] night and we'll go from there."

Schmidt scored four points in 39 games for Washington this season and has 10 points in 68 career NHL games.
