U.S. names Oilers' Matt Hendricks captain for Worlds

Edmonton Oilers forward Matt Hendricks was named Thursday as captain of the United States for the IIHF World Championship in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic.

USA Hockey said Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk and Los Angeles Kings forward Trevor Lewis will serve as alternate captains.

Hendricks, 33, had eight goals, 16 points and 76 penalty minutes in 71 games for the Oilers.

Earlier Thursday, two New York Islanders forwards, Anders Lee and Brock Nelson, and Texas Stars goaltender Jack Campbell were added to the team. USA Hockey also said New Jersey Devils forward Stefan Matteau has returned home after sustaining an eye injury in a 4-1 pretournament win against Austria on Tuesday.

Lee was second on the Islanders with 25 goals and had 41 points in 76 games in his first full NHL season. Nelson finished his second season with 20 goals and 42 points in 82 games. Campbell was 14-14-5 with a 3.03 goals-against average and .907 save percentage in 35 games with Texas, the Dallas Stars' affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Lee is making his first appearance with a U.S. national team. Nelson played for the United States at the 2014 World Championship and was a member of the bronze medal-winning team at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship. Campbell led the United States to the gold medal at the 2010 World Juniors and was a member of the 2011 team.

The U.S. roster has 13 forwards, eight defensemen and three goaltenders. The United States is in Group B and plays its first game against Finland on Friday at CEZ Arena in Ostrava.
