ARLINGTON, Va. -- Washington Capitals forward Eric Fehr will not be available to play against the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Second Round on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET; CBC, TVA Sports, NBCSN), Capitals coach Barry Trotz said Wednesday.

Fehr, listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury, skated Wednesday but worked separately with a strength and conditioning coach and did not participate in practice.

Trotz would not disclose Fehr's status for Game 2.

"He's going to make the trip," Trotz said.

Trotz said on April 26 he expected Fehr to be ready for another playoff series. On Wednesday he said Fehr's recovery was progressing as expected and he would miss at least one more game.

Fehr was injured in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the New York Islanders on April 19. He was expected to miss two games because of the injury but he did not skate for a week and missed four games of the series.

Rookie Andre Burakovsky entered the lineup in Fehr's absence.

"That's [Stanley Cup] Playoffs for you," defenseman Karl Alzner told the Washington Post last week. "You're going to have some big injuries at times. You could lose a guy for a month or lose a guy for a game. It's just the way you deal with it and the way guys step up, and we have a lot of really good players in this room."

The injury is unrelated to the one that sidelined Fehr for the final three games of the regular season.

Fehr has had shoulder issues throughout his career and had surgeries to deal with them in 2009 and 2011. Trotz said Fehr aggravated a different, lingering problem he dealt with during the regular season.

Fehr had no points and two shots on goal in three games. He had 19 goals and 33 points in 75 regular-season games.
