PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have attempted to fill their injury-plagued roster with a few American Hockey League call-ups.

Pittsburgh recalled forward Scott Wilson from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Tuesday, a day after calling up defensemen Scott Harrington and Brian Dumoulin, prior to Game 1 of its Eastern Conference First Round series against the New York Rangers on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; CBC, NBCSN, TVA Sports, ROOT, MSG).

Wilson's addition is expected to add depth to an offense that averaged 1.83 goals per game in its final six regular-season games despite holding early leads and averaging 35.3 shots per game.

"He gives us some depth and that's what you're looking for when you enter the playoffs," Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Tuesday. "He's a good two-way forward and he can score, he's got a good stick. But he also plays a gritty, almost playoff-style game. So he's one of the forwards down there that he plays the way [they need in the playoffs] primarily. He can create offensively, solid defensively … and then he plays with some grit and compete to his games.

"He's not an overly-big guy (5-foot-11, 183 pounds) but he's a very competitive player."

Wilson made his NHL debut against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 2. It lasted seven shifts totaling 4:21 of ice time because of a leg injury. He leads Wilkes-Barre/Scranton with seven power-play goals and 147 shots, is third with 19 goals and fourth with 22 assists.

“It was definitely frustrating personally,” Wilson said. “Anytime you’re given an opportunity and it’s cut short by some bad luck, you’re definitely going to take it personally, but I’m just happy to be back here again … I’m here to fill any role that they need.”

Harrington and Dumoulin give the Penguins a full complement of defensemen after they had been playing with five during two stints late in the regular season because of injuries to Kris Letang (concussion) and Christian Ehrhoff (upper body). Johnston said Dumoulin could see playing time alongside Taylor Chorney, who he was paired with in the AHL, at some point in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Chorney was recalled April 3.

"I would say [Dumoulin] has a slight edge there," Johnston said. "Chorney definitely has the nod right now, just by the way he's played, and even today the way he practiced. He has a lot of confidence. He looks good out there, he feels comfortable, and I think if you talk to the guys in [Wilkes-Barre/Scranton] he was really ramping up his game these last few months.

"He got an opportunity where all of a sudden the door was open here and he took advantage of it. … To put somebody with him, Dumoulin would be a natural thing."

Ehrhoff has practiced the past two days and was cleared for contact Tuesday. He is listed as day-to-day, Johnston said.
