At the Rink: Senators at Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- Goaltender Craig Anderson will be back trying to help the Ottawa Senators make the Stanley Cup Playoffs when they face the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; CBC, TVA2).

Anderson, 33, has been nursing a deep bone bruise on his right hand and while he was out goalie Andrew Hammond took the hockey world by storm going 14-0-1 in his first 15 starts. Hammond is now out with a lower-body injury sustained in a collision with San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture on March 23.

"The plan is for me to get in tonight and give it a whirl," Anderson said after the morning skate. "I feel pretty good. I feel like it is where I need to be at this point of the weekend. We need to keep winning and playing well. For me, when you get out there and get in the moment you forget about everything else."

Forward Clarke MacArthur will return for the Senators (37-25-11), who are 8-2-0 in their past 10 games and hold the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Ottawa won seven straight before losing 5-1 against the New York Rangers on Thursday. The Maple Leafs (27-42-6) are 27th overall and have lost seven games in a row.

Asked if he views the game against Toronto, his first game since March 10, as an opportunity to win back the starting job, Anderson said that is not the case.

"I think Hammond came in here and won some huge games for us -- stole some games -- and gave the guys hope and confidence to play with," Anderson said. "My job is to come in and just do the same, give the team an opportunity to win which I have been doing my entire career. You earn your ice time. You play well and you're going to play more."

MacArthur, who has 13 goals and 26 points in 53 games, last played Feb. 16 against the Carolina Hurricanes, a game in which he and goalie Robin Lehner were injured on the same play running into each other on a Carolina goal. That led to Hammond's first appearance of the season in relief.

While the Battle of Ontario doesn't hold quite the same meaning as it once did, Toronto goalie James Reimer said the Maple Leafs relish the opportunity of playing spoiler against Ottawa.

Reimer, who is 10-3-1 in his career against the Senators, will start for the Maple Leafs.

"When playoffs are not an option you want to try to ruin other people's hopes of making it," Reimer said. "Tonight is another chance for us to do that. Ottawa is obviously playing for a playoff spot and it's tight between a couple teams, so these points are very valuable to them. Hopefully we can play spoiler and have some fun taking those points away from them."

Injuries have depleted the Maple Leafs roster, which means on any given night Reimer or fellow goaltender Jonathan Bernier is under tremendous pressure to help the team win.

"Sometimes with guys being hurt it puts a different spin on the game, but for us we just want to go out there and make the next save," Reimer said. "It's a situation now where we're fighting for our jobs and for pride, our families and for the fans. You want to go out there and play your best. Most importantly you want to play your best for your teammates."

If players enjoy the potential to play spoiler, coaches view such games differently.

"I think there is joy in the success of a team having success," Toronto coach Peter Horachek said. "You want to see the players work as a team and come together and have success doing that. That's where you get the most appreciation. We want to see the guys put it on the line and compete hard."
