PITTSBURGH -- Evgeni Malkin will not play Sunday, but Sidney Crosby will for the Pittsburgh Penguins when they face the Detroit Red Wings.
Malkin will be unavailable because of a lower-body injury sustained during his first shift of Pittsburgh’s 2-0 loss Saturday to the Boston Bruins, coach Mike Johnston said. Crosby’s status was questionable after electing not to play because of illness against Boston minutes before the game began, Johnston said, but he is in the lineup.
Malkin's injury is not anticipated to be long-term. Johnston said the team will learn more in the next few days.
"As with injuries, those types of things settle down after a couple of days and you get a real good read on where it will be," Johnston said.
Crosby and Malkin lead the Penguins in points with 70 and 68, respectively. Malkin leads Pittsburgh with 28 goals, five more than Crosby and forward Patric Hornqvist.
