Eichel, McDavid continue their offensive dominance

After celebrating the first Beanpot Tournament title in six years at Boston University, freshman Jack Eichel now has his sights on a Hockey East championship before the focus shifts to the national crown.

As the schedule-makers would have it, Boston University (21-7-5 overall; 14-5-3 Hockey East) had three games against Northeastern University last week and came away with two wins. The most important being the Beanpot final on Feb. 23 before 17,000-plus fans at TD Garden in Boston.

That's where Eichel, No. 2 on NHL Central Scouting's midterm list of the top North American skaters, picked up the secondary assist 51 seconds into overtime when Terriers captain and Boston Bruins prospect Matt Grzelcyk scored for a 4-3 victory.

"He got one point but he [helps] draws the penalty [in overtime]," Terriers coach David Quinn said of Eichel. "His speed is so intimidating to people and when he gets that puck and starts carrying through the neutral zone the other team is always aware of him. He gives us a swagger and it's infectious."

The Boston University publicity department has already started its promotional campaign for Eichel as the Hobey Baker Award winner. Buttons that read "I Like Eich" were handed to all fans willing to wear one at the Beanpot final.

The Terriers rebounded from a 6-5 loss to Northeastern on Friday with a 6-1 win against the Huskies on Saturday to clinch the top seed in the Hockey East tournament. In the win, Eichel scored a shorthanded goal and power-play goal and has 18 goals, 55 points and a plus-36 rating in 32 games this season. Eichel, who leads the nation with a 1.72 points-per game average, is the first freshman at Boston University to reach 50 points since Tony Amonte with 58 in 1989-90.

Boston University, Providence, Boston College and UMass-Lowell all earned byes into the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East Tournament that begins March 13. The Terriers will play the lowest seed at Agganis Arena on the campus of Boston University.

Erie Otters captain Connor McDavid, the top-ranked skater on Central Scouting's midterm list of North Americans, extended his franchise record point streak to 24 games after producing five goals and 10 points in three matches last week. He has 23 goals and 50 points during his point-scoring stretch.

McDavid is fourth in the Ontario Hockey League with 102 points (37 goals, 65 assists) in 39 games. He trails OHL leader Mitchell Marner (43 goals, 75 assists, 119 points), No. 7 on Central Scouting's midterm rankings, by 16 points. Marner has played 56 games in 2014-15.

The left-handed shooting center can equal the longest overall scoring streak (25 games) in the OHL this season on Wednesday on home ice against the Barrie Colts at 7 p.m. ET. Colts forward Kevin Lebanc, selected in the sixth round by the San Jose Sharks in the 2014 NHL Draft, currently holds the 25-game point standard. He scored 15 goals and 52 points over that stretch from Nov. 1, 2014 through Jan. 10, 2015.

McDavid has 90 goals, 177 assists and 267 points in 158 career games with the Otters.
