At the Rink: Red Wings at Ducks

ANAHEIM -- The Anaheim Ducks goalie situation further unfolded Monday, but John Gibson will make his sixth straight start when they play the Detroit Red Wings at Honda Center.

Frederik Andersen, the No. 1 goalie most of the season, remains out with a neck injury. Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said he thought later this week might be realistic for Andersen to return, but Andersen downplayed any kind of timetable. Andersen said he needs to get his conditioning back up to speed. He has been out since Feb. 8, when the goal apparatus fell on him.

"It's tough to say," Andersen said. "It's really a day-by-day thing. We can't really predict how I'm going to feel tomorrow or Wednesday. But yeah, for sure, I'd rather be out there sooner than that, but we can't predict the future."

Andersen said he wants to get himself right for the long run, specifically the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"If I look back on my career in 15 years, I don't think I'm going to be disappointed that I took another week or two, but it's about taking the right steps," he said.

Gibson, meanwhile, has ably stepped in and helped the Ducks win two straight after losing four of five. His re-emergence facilitated the expendability of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, who cleared waivers in the morning. There is no impending move and Anaheim general manager Bob Murray will speak to Bryzgalov's agent later, a team official said.

Veteran goalie Jason LaBarbera was recalled from Norfolk of the American Hockey League. He arrived in Orange County at 7:15 a.m. ET and will serve as Gibson's backup.

"I feel like I'm in la-la-land a little bit," LaBarbera said. "[But it's] not bad. My body feels alright."

Anaheim will continue with its new-look lineup, notably the third straight game in which center Ryan Getzlaf is split up with longtime linemate and right wing Corey Perry, who is skating with center Ryan Kesler.

"When you've got speed and size and skill, it's a pretty dynamic player," Perry said of Kesler. "Nothing really changes from him to [Getzlaf]. It's just you go, you got to play hockey and it doesn't matter who's really there."

Perry understood the change because the Ducks were losing. He played with different centers earlier this season when Getzlaf was injured.

The Ducks are coming off wins against the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames, although Boudreau noted that "we're really talking a different class when we're talking Edmonton-Calgary and we're talking Detroit here. Tonight's going to be the real big test for us."

This is Detroit's only appearance in Anaheim this season, but it has a long playoff history with Anaheim and the bad blood hasn't dissipated.

"They're still fresh in our minds," Perry said. "There's a lot of history with them and us. We've played each other in the playoffs quite a few times the past few years. It's a great rivalry. It's a lot of fun to play in these games. They're big games. They're not in our division or conference anymore, but you still get up for these types of games."

Detroit canceled its skate. General manager Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press that left wing Henrik Zetterberg is doubtful. Zetterberg left after the second period with an upper-body injury Saturday and did not return. He was hit in the head by Jamie Benn of the Dallas Stars early in the period.

Zetterberg missed 37 games last season, mostly because of a back injury. Right wing Daniel Cleary and center Joakim Andersson are available if Zetterberg and/or Teemu Pulkkinen (leg) are not available.

Detroit on Saturday became the first team to trail by two or more goals in the third period, tie the game and then fall behind by at least two goals again before winning since the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 16, 1934, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
