Defenseman Provorov sustains upper body injury

Brandon Wheat Kings defenseman Ivan Provorov, No. 10 on NHL Central Scouting's midterm list of the top North American skaters eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft, is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury, according the Western Hockey League injury report.

Provorov, who sustained his injury after blocking a shot in a victory against the Kootenay Ice on Feb. 7, could miss games against the Spokane Chiefs on Friday and Prince Albert Raiders on Sunday.

The Russian defenseman, who is in his fourth season in North America, has certainly caught the eye of NHL scouts this season with his consistently solid play along the blue line for the Wheat Kings.

Provorov (6-foot, 191 pounds) not only leads all defensemen in the Western Hockey League with 51 points (12 goals, 39 assists) in 48 games, but he represented silver medal-winning Russia at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship and impressed with a solid all-around performance at the 2015 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game on Jan. 22.

"What's interesting for me with Ivan is as offensively gifted as he is, it's his attention to detail and his motivation to be such a good player in all three zones that make him special," Wheat Kings general manager and coach Kelly McCrimmon said. "I think the best part of his game is breaking the puck out and leading a forecheck. He's been a tremendous player."
