Fantasy Spin: Injury muddles Ducks' goalie situation

Frederik Andersen is having a great season for the Anaheim Ducks (29-8-5, .916 save percentage, .237 goals-against average), but he was placed on injured reserve Tuesday because of an upper-body injury, which has muddled their goaltending situation for fantasy owners.

Ilya Bryzgalov (5 percent owned) got the start and allowed three goals on eight shots in 25:57 of ice time before being pulled in favor of John Gibson (34 percent owned) in a 6-2 loss to the Florida Panthers. Gibson, who started the season opener for the Ducks, was called up from Norfolk of the American Hockey League Tuesday and was 2-2-0 with a 2.28 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage earlier this season with Anaheim. He allowed three goals on 18 shots in 34:03.

Given that Gibson is owned in one-third of leagues and Bryzgalov's continues to struggle, Gibson likely will get majority of starts during Andersen's absence, but his performance on Tuesday didn't do him any favors.

- Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason will be out 2-3 weeks because of a lower-body injury and backup Ray Emery (17 percent owned) started against the Montreal Canadiens and made 35 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss. Emery's numbers aren't strong (he's 9-9-2 with a 3.25 GAA and a .891 save percentage), but the chances that Devan Dubnyk or Cam Talbot are un-owned is unlikely.

- New York Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello skated with Rick Nash and Derick Brassard, with whom he had success earlier this season. Zuccarello (45 percent owned, LW, RW) had two goals in a 5-4 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday, and has points in six straight games (three goals, five assists).

- It may be an extremely small sample size, but New York Islanders forward Colin McDonald (less than 1 percent owned) had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers and has goals in back-to-back games since bring recalled from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League last weekend. He has played in four games this season (the previous two were in October). But with injuries to forwards Kyle Okposo (80 percent owned, RW) and Michael Grabner (2 percent owned, LW, RW), McDonald could be in the lineup for a while.
