Canucks, Rangers pursuing Leafs' Santorelli: report

The Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers are two of the teams that have talked to the Toronto Maple Leafs about acquiring forward Mike Santorelli, according to ESPN.com.

Santorelli, in his first season with the Maple Leafs, has 10 goals and 28 points in 52 games, the same totals he had in 48 games last season with the Canucks. The 29-year-old has played mostly on the wing this season but can play center. He's won 47 percent of his faceoffs but last season in Vancouver he won 51.3 percent while taking 419 draws, fourth-most on the Canucks.

The Canucks and Rangers could use help on faceoffs; the Canucks entered play Wednesday 22nd in the NHL at 48.2 percent, and the Rangers are 29th at 46.5 percent.

The ESPN.com report quotes a source saying the Maple Leafs have spoken with Santorelli's agent about a contract extension; Santorelli signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract during the summer and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. If the two sides can find common ground Santorelli could be re-signed. If they don't have something done before the 2015 NHL Trade Deadline, 3 p.m. ET on March 2, Santorelli could be moved.
