Team Foligno survives shootout, wins competition

COLUMBUS -- The final event of the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition was the Discover NHL Shootout.

It was a new format for the shootout. Here were the official rules laid out before it started:

"All players will participate in this three-round shootout. During each two-minute round, seven skaters and one goalie from each team will take the ice. The goalies will take their place in net, and the skaters will line up in the offensive zone, facing their opposing goalie. Each player is given 10 seconds to take a shot. Teams will alternate after each shot until the two-minute clock runs down. Every third puck will be a Discover card puck, which is worth more points. Each scoring attempt is officiated following NHL shootout rules. Points available: one point for every goal scored; two points for every goal scored with a Discover card puck."

Team Toews won the final round 6-2, but it wasn’t enough to complete a comeback. John Tavares scored for Team Toews by using the "postage stamp" move made famous by Peter Forsberg, and Filip Forsberg (no relation) converted on one of the more creative moves of the competition. Rick Nash scored on each of his attempts and was booed twice.

Team Folingo's large lead was too much to overcome for Team Toews and defeated the latter in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition 25-19.

Team Toews collected five points in the first of three rounds. Mike Hoffman had the slickest move kicking the puck with his skate into an open position in close on Brian Elliott. Tyler Seguin scored two points by scoring with a Discover puck.

Team Foligno had two points in the first round. Dustin Byfuglien scored, and then Alex Ovechkin scored the second time through before time expired.

Team Foligno came back with five points in the second round. Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored twice, including once on a Discover puck. Jonathan Drouin also scored with a nifty shot, but goaltender Roberto Luongo made the save of the competition by robbing Jiri Sekac on what looked like a sure goal by sprawling out and reaching back with his stick.
