Cape Breton's Svechnikov honored by CHL

Left wing Evgeni Svechnikov of Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, an A-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's players to watch list for the 2015 NHL Draft, was named player of the week by the Canadian Hockey League on Tuesday.

Svechnikov (6-foot-2, 199 pounds) had three goals and nine points in three victories last week for Cape Breton. The Russian-born forward has 16 goals, 46 points and a plus-8 rating in his first season in North America.

Svechnikov, who lists Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin as his favorite NHL player, was selected in the second round (No. 63) by the Screaming Eagles in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.
