Fantasy Spin: Stepan, Fisher worth a look

New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan scored three goals in a 3-1 win against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday and has 22 points in 21 games.

Point-per game players are not often available, but Stepan is owned in 55 percent of Yahoo leagues. He has eight points in his past four games, has averaged more than 18 minutes of ice time per game, and sees time on the power play (3:12 per game) and penalty kill (1:36).

The downside is he's only eligible at center and doesn't take penalties (2 PIM) or deliver hits (13), but he's usually going to get on the scoresheet. His three goals Saturday were shorthanded, on the power play, and with the net empty.

Stepan is fourth on the Rangers in scoring and has 10 even-strength points, four shorthanded and eight on the power play, where he plays on the first unit with Dan Boyle, Derick Brassard, Martin St. Louis and Rick Nash.

Stepan had 44 points in 48 games in 2012-13, and 57 in 82 last season.

-- Nashville Predators forward Mike Fisher (6 percent owned, C) should see a spike in ownership. He had a power-play goal and an assist in a 4-1 win against the Flyers. Fisher has seven points in his past seven games (four goals, three assists) and has all nine of his points in his past 10 games. He missed 21 games after sustaining an Achilles injury during the offseason.

In 77 games last season, Fisher had 49 points (20 goals, 29 assists), 60 penalty minutes and 177 shots on goal. He also had 11 points on the power play, and has three this season, a number which should increase with his role on the man-advantage. Fisher plays on the top power-play unit with Filip Forsberg, James Neal, Roman Josi and Shea Weber.

-- Columbus Blue Jackets forward Scott Hartnell (67 percent owned, LW), who hadn't played since Dec. 11 because of a broken finger, scored two goals in a 6-2 win against the Boston Bruins.

Hartnell, played 18:07 (including 1:51 on the power play) and had two shots and four hits. Prior to Saturday, he had three points in four games, but did not have a point in 10 games before that.

-- Calgary Flames rookie forward Johnny Gaudreau (42 percent owned, LW) is making a push for the Calder Trophy with another fine performance. Gaudreau scored two goals in 16 seconds in a 4-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers. He has six goals in his past three games and is second in rookie scoring behind Forsberg (34-29).

Gaudreau is plus-9 and has 70 shots on goal. Scoring is pretty much all you'll get from him; he has no penalty minutes and three hits.
