Goalie Jonathan Bernier will miss the Toronto Maple Leafs' game Sunday against the Florida Panthers with what coach Randy Carlyle called flu-like symptoms. The Maple Leafs said in a statement that Bernier is not showing any signs of the mumps at this time.
"We don't think it's something that's going to strike our team, we hope not anyways but you never know," Carlyle told the Maple Leafs website. "We're just going to continue to try to do what we do. Things like this do happen through the course of the season. Players do get sick, coaches get sick, TV reporters get sick, everybody gets sick when it's their turn, it seems. What are you going to do?"
Bernier made 43 saves in Toronto's 4-0 win Tuesday against the Dallas Stars for his second shutout of the season after allowing a combined 10 goals in his prior two starts. He is 14-8-3 with a 2.65 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.
Carlyle is hoping Bernier can travel Monday for Toronto's game that night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Otherwise he'll remain at the hotel and meet the Maple Leafs in Boston, where Toronto plays the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
Goalie Christopher Gibson was recalled from Toronto of the American Hockey League to back up starter James Reimer. Gibson, 22, is 6-9-2 with a 2.52 GAA and .919 save percentage in 17 games with the Marlies.
The Maple Leafs also placed forward Leo Komarov (concussion) on the seven-day injured reserve list retroactive to Nov. 29.
