Canada defeated the Toronto CIS Selects 10-3 on Saturday in a tuneup for the upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship.
Goalie Zachary Fucale, who is expected to start when Canada opens the 10-nation tournament Dec. 26 vs. Slovakia, made 23 saves in the scrimmage in Toronto, according to TSN.
Top 2015 NHL Draft prospect Connor McDavid (broken finger) did not play.
Nick Ritchie, who was the Anaheim Ducks' first-round pick at the 2014 NHL Draft (No. 10), Lawson Crouse (2015 draft eligible) and Brayden Point (Tampa Bay Lightning) scored to send Canada to first intermission with a 3-1 lead.
Toronto CIS Selects, comprised of players from Toronto universities, got power-play goals from Alex Basso and Domenic Alberga, each of Ryerson University. Mark Cross of York University also scored.
Robby Fabbri (St. Louis Blues) scored two goals in the second period. Michael Dal Colle (New York Islanders) also scored for Canada in the second.
"It's a big game; it's the first game for all of us here at camp and we're all looking to make that good first impression in front of all the management staff here," forward Michael Dal Colle told TSN before the game. "So it's a pretty big game for all of us."
Alberga pulled the Toronto CIS Selects within 6-3 early in the third period, but Canada scored four unanswered goals. The first three were by Madison Bowey (Washington Capitals), Dillon Heatherington (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Morgan Klimchuk (Calgary Flames). Travis Sanheim (Philadelphia Flyers) completed the scoring just before the final buzzer.
Canada and the Toronto CIS Selects will play again Sunday. Canada is expected to make its first cuts toward its final 22-man roster after the scrimmage.
"We evaluate them every day in practice but nothing is better than a game to see what kind of player, what he can do on the ice for you," coach Benoit Groulx told TSN before the game.
Canada will play three pretournament games against national junior teams, beginning Friday vs. Russia in Toronto.
Anthony Duclair, who the New York Rangers loaned to Canada, and Sam Reinhart (Buffalo Sabres) were among Canada's scratches.
