Bryzgalov joins Ducks on tryout; LaBarbera out

ANAHEIM -- The Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday announced goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov would be joining the Ducks on a tryout after an injury to goalie Jason LaBarbera.

Bryzgalov, 34, is expected to report to Anaheim sometime Wednesday to see the Ducks doctor, an Anaheim spokesman said.

Bryzgalov began his NHL career with the Ducks. A second-round pick (No. 44) in the 2000 NHL Draft, Bryzgalov went 26-23-8 with the Ducks from 2001-07. He was the backup goalie when Anaheim won the Stanley Cup in 2007. He shares the Ducks record with Jean-Sebastien Giguere with three straight shutouts in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2006.

He split last season with the Edmonton Oilers and Minnesota Wild, and played nine games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Wild.

Bryzgalov has 220 wins, a 2.56 goals-against average and .913 save percentage in 457 games with the Ducks, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Oilers and Wild.

"I want to sit down and have a conversation with him and see what all the big hubbub's about," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "But the one thing I do know about him is that he stops the puck. He didn't have a great experience in Philly, but he was tremendous in [Arizona] and he was tremendous when he was here and he was really good in Minnesota. When he does come in … if he's still in shape, he's a really good goaltender."

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf, a teammate during that 2007 Stanley Cup run, was happy with the decision to bring in Bryzgalov.

"He's a great goaltender," Getzlaf said. "When he's on he plays so well. I think when you're given the situation such as this, you bring him on a tryout, hopefully he realizes -- he's been sitting at home -- he's going to have an opportunity to possibly be back in the NHL again."

LaBarbera has a broken bone in his hand; the Ducks expect him to be out two to three weeks. The Ducks recalled goalie Igor Bobkov as a backup to Frederik Andersen. Goalie John Gibson remains out with a groin injury.

Anaheim also announced that defenseman Eric Brewer will be out four to six weeks with a broken bone in his foot, from a blocked shot. Defenseman Clayton Stoner took part in the morning skate and is expected to return to the lineup when the Ducks play the Flyers on Wednesday at Honda Center.
