New York Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak was a guest of NHL Live to discuss their hot start to the regular season.
The Islanders (17-7-0) are winners of 11 of their past 13 games (11-2-0) for the first time in 24 years and have won 14 of their first 24 games for the first time in franchise history. Tied for first place in the Metropolitan Division with 34 points, New York plays the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday at Nassau Coliseum.
"It was a great month," Halak said. "It's a lot of fun when you keep winning as a team. It's been great but we still have a lot of work ahead of us."
Halak was named the NHL's "First Star" for the week ending Nov. 30 after going 3-0-0 with a 0.95 goals-against average, .964 save percentage and a shutout to help the Islanders complete their best November (11-3-0) in 34 years. New York's 3-1 victory Saturday against the New Jersey Devils extended Halak's personal winning streak to a career-high nine games, one shy of Billy Smith's franchise record set in 1982.
After winning his first three starts, Halak lost his next four before embarking on his winning streak.
"I just needed to be better for my team," Halak said. "I knew I could be better. We got some key goals at key moments and I think the guys have been really good on the [penalty kill]. That was our biggest improvements from the beginning of the season, being able to kill a lot of penalties."
