Knights' Marner named CHL player of the week

London Knights center Mitchell Marner, an A-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary players to watch list for October, was named Canadian Hockey League player of the week for games ending Nov. 2.

Marner, a 5-foot-11, 155-pound right-hand shot, had seven goals, nine points and a plus-7 rating in three victories for the Knights. Marner is seventh in the Ontario Hockey League this season with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 16 games.

"He's a skilled guy, skates well and plays with energy," Central Scouting’s Chris Edwards said.

Marner had three straight three-point games last week to help extend London's winning streak to six games. He had a goal and two assists in an 8-5 victory against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Oct. 31, had his first OHL hat trick in a 4-3 win at the Windsor Spitfires on Nov. 1, and had another hat trick in a 7-2 win against the Sudbury Wolves one day later.

The Thornhill, Ontario, native has 23 goals and 81 points in 80 OHL games spanning two seasons. He was the 19th pick of the 2013 OHL draft. Marner will play for the OHL against Russia in the Subway Super Series game in Kingston, Ontario on Nov. 17.

As a rookie last season Marner had 13 goals, 59 points and a plus-38 rating in 64 games. He had three goals and nine points in nine OHL playoff games.
