McKenzie discusses new book on NHL Live

NHL Insider Bob McKenzie joined NHL Live in studio to discuss his new book, "Hockey Confidential."

"I really wanted it to be different," McKenzie said. "One of the things that I've really gotten away from in my job, where it's 140 characters at a time on Twitter or 40 seconds on television, is to do some longform storytelling. I ran across some stories that I thought were interesting, that people hadn't heard before, and decided that was the kind of book I wanted to write."

"Hockey Confidential" shares numerous stories about the superstars of the game, including New York Islanders captain John Tavares and Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban's family.

"I knew I had to have some hardcore hockey stuff with the big names in the game," McKenzie said. "I talked not just to P.K. Subban but more his dad. The story of the Subban family emigrating from Jamaica in 1970,and becoming Montreal Canadiens fans, and putting three boys in the NHL. But also being a principal of in a high-risk, low-income neighborhood in Toronto, where he equates teaching to saving lives and how he wants his legacy to be that, and not just putting kids in the NHL.

"John Tavares [is the] essence of goal scoring in the National Hockey League but also to talk about his admiration for his uncle. For my money, John Tavares the lacrosse player most people don't know who he is. He's as good an athlete as Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe in his own right, but most people don't know who he is."
