Drouin could be ready for Lightning opener: report

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jonathan Drouin's fractured thumb is healing as expected, and general manager Steve Yzerman said Saturday he could be ready for the season opener or shortly thereafter.

Drouin sustained a slight fracture in his right thumb in a training camp practice Sept. 18 and was projected to miss 3-4 weeks. The Lightning open the regular season Oct. 9 against the Florida Panthers, which would be exactly three weeks after the injury occurred.

Yzerman told The Associated Press follow-up X-rays on Drouin's thumb showed the healing process is continuing.

The Tampa Bay Times reported Drouin skated on his own Saturday.

The Lightning played their final preseason game, defeating the Florida Panthers 4-1.
