Maple Leafs' Franson has no knee damage: report

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Cody Franson does not have structural damage to his left knee but his return to the ice is unknown, TSN reported Wednesday.

Coach Randy Carlyle told the network a timetable can't be determined until the swelling from the injury goes down. Franson was injured on a hit from Buffalo Sabres forward Torrey Mitchell in a preseason game Monday.

"I thought my kneecap was like shattered," Franson told the Toronto Sun. "It was one of the more painful things I have had in my career. It was a bone bruise and a contusion. I got lucky."

TSN reported, "Franson walked with a heavy limp on Wednesday but was able to ride the bike lightly."

"I'm trying to get the swelling down now -- it's come down a bit -- then we will work on the range of movement," Franson told the Sun. "After that, it's all about managing the pain and getting back into it."

TSN said forward David Booth, who sustained a fractured foot Monday and is out 4-6 weeks, wore a walking boot and used crutches during team-bonding events.

The Maple Leafs open the regular season Oct. 8 at home against the Montreal Canadiens.
