Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist has soreness but no significant injury as the result of a knee-on-knee hit in the final minute of a game Saturday against the Boston Bruins, according to the Detroit Free Press.
"It looked scary at the time but the initial word is that it looks like a day-to-day, short-term injury," general manager Ken Holland told the Free Press on Sunday. He said Nyquist had been thoroughly examined by team doctors.
Nyquist emerged last season with 28 goals in 57 regular-season games. His offense becomes even more important to the Red Wings with center Pavel Datsyuk out 4-5 weeks with a shoulder injury.
The Red Wings also still don't know if Daniel Alfredsson, who tied for their scoring lead last season, will be an option at some point. Alfredsson remains unsigned as he figures out if his back will allow him to play, but the Free Press reported he visited with Holland on Thursday and has said he's feeling better every day.
"Before he takes the next step, which would be to join our team on a [professional tryout contract], he wants to make sure in his own mind that he feels good day after day after day," Holland said. "He has tested it on his own, on ice, off ice. He doesn't want to come back, be on the ice for two days, then leave again.
"I'm waiting for him to walk into my office and tell me he can practice, or that he's retiring."
