Competition on Islanders defense driving de Haan

New York Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan joined NHL Live in studio to discuss what's ahead for the Islanders in 2014-15 and to answer fan questions.

De Haan, 23, is part of a young group of Islanders defenseman looking to make their mark in 2014-15.

"Obviously I want to solidify myself as an NHL player, but that competition makes me want to work a little harder and do the right things," de Haan said.

Selected No. 12 in the 2009 NHL Draft, de Haan was called up from Bridgeport of the American Hockey League on Nov. 28. He scored 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 51 games last season as a rookie and his average ice time of 21:01 ranked fourth on the Islanders.

What surprised him the most playing in the League was the speed of the game.

"Everything happens a little quicker from the minors and it's almost like it's easier to play up there sometimes too because everyone's usually in the right position," de Haan said. "I had a great experience and it was a lot of fun."
