Flames' Bennett practices, Backlund remains out

Calgary Flames center Sam Bennett, the fourth player taken in the 2014 NHL Draft, skated during a practice session Monday. It was his first time on the ice with the main group at training camp.

Bennett, No. 8 on NHL.com's Top 60 prospect ranking, had been out with a groin injury.

The 18-year-old forward said the injury likely was a result of him pushing too hard too early in the season.

"I think it's just probably a little overuse," he told the team's website. "I've got a good program now that I'm definitely going to be aware of my groin."

The next step for Bennett is to get into a preseason game. The Flames next play Sept. 24 against the Arizona Coyotes in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, as part of the 2014 Kraft Hockeyville festivities.

"I don't know what the plan is," he said. "I'll probably find out on game day but I'm itching to play."

The news wasn't as good for forward Mikael Backlund, who has been unable to skate since camp started because of an abdominal strain.

"I don't have any news to tell you, but I'm worried," coach Bob Hartley said.

Backlund still is listed as day-to-day.
