Stars' Peverley cleared to work out off ice

Dallas Stars forward Rich Peverley has been cleared to work out, but not on the ice, general manager Jim Nill told the Dallas Morning News on Thursday.

"He has to go to a cardiologist to be tested, and there’s no timeline on that right now," Nill said. "He's been working at getting his heart rate up, and I think it's a matter of seeing how far he can go, and how he feels.

Peverley, 32, hasn't played since collapsing on the Stars' bench March 10 during a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He had a corrective procedure March 19 to fix structural damage in his heart to correct problems with rhythm (arrhythmia).

"I think we're all moving day to day and trying to see how far he can push it," Nill said. "We'll have patience with Rich and support him and simply go through the process. So much of it is listening to the doctors and allow them to guide the process."

Peverley has 84 goals and 241 points in 442 regular-season games in eight NHL seasons, including 30 points (seven goals, 23 assists) in 62 games for the Stars last season. He won the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011 and was acquired by Dallas from Boston on July 4, 2013.

The Stars open training camp Friday in Fort Worth and likely will be without restricted free agents Brenden Dillon and Cody Eakin, according to the Morning News. Dillion, 23, led the Stars in hits (168) and was second in blocked shots (149) last season. Eakin, 23, had 16 goals and 35 points in 81 games.

"No," Nill told the Stars website when asked if there was anything new in negotiations. "We've been having communications, but that's the way it goes. I hope we have something done here quick, I am anticipating. But it's an opportunity for other guys to step up. We knew there was going to be healthy competition even if they were here, but it is even more competition now.

"We saw in Traverse City that there are some good young players knocking on the door, and we know guys from Texas [American Hockey League] are knocking on the door. It's good competition. We hope to get these guys back so they can get their game going, but we'll move on without them and go from there."

Dallas also is missing prospect Brett Ritchie, who is out for two weeks after breaking his pinkie during the Traverse City Prospect Tournament.
