Devils' Clowe cleared for camp participation: report

New Jersey Devils forward Ryane Clowe confirmed to reporters Thursday that he has been cleared for contact and is ready for training camp.

"I'll be on the ice [Friday]," Clowe told NJ.com.

Clowe, who saw a concussion specialist in Boston on Monday, said he doesn't expect to play in the Devils' preseason opener Monday at the New York Rangers.

New Jersey plays six preseason games before opening the regular season Oct. 9 at the Philadelphia Flyers.

Clowe, who turns 32 on Sept. 30, has a history of concussions. He had seven goals and 26 points in 43 games last season, his first with the Devils after signing a five-year, $24.25 million contract in the summer of 2013. He missed more than two months early in the season with a concussion and didn't play after a March 31 game against the Florida Panthers when he sustained another concussion.

"At the end of last year I was just so frustrated," Clowe said, according to NJ.com. "To be honest, I thought: 'I don't know how much more of this I can go through.' At the end of last year I said I was concerned about my future.

"I was pretty satisfied when I played last year. I thought it was some of the best hockey I played in a long time."

A sixth-round pick (No. 175) of the San Jose Sharks in the 2001 NHL Draft, Clowe has 111 goals and 305 points in 478 games for the Sharks, Rangers and Devils.
