Blue Jackets' Milano out with facial fractures

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sonny Milano is out of the NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, Mich., and could miss the start of the 2014-15 season because of facial fractures, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Milano, the No. 16 pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, was checked into the boards during a game Friday night. Don Harkins, director of U.S. Scouting for the Plymouth Whalers (the team Milano is expected to play for in 2014-15), told Portzline that Milano has a fractured orbital bone and fractured cheek.

Harkins said Milano could miss eight weeks with the injuries, but Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekalainen told Portzline he might only miss two weeks because they are non-displaced fractures. That timeframe might allow Milano to participate in the Blue Jackets' training camp before joining the Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League.

Milano, a Massapequa, N.Y., native was named the NHL's No. 42 prospect by NHL.com for the 2014-15 season. He was second on the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18 team with 86 points in 2013-14, and had originally committed to playing at Boston College before deciding to join Plymouth in the OHL.
