Lewis brings Stanley Cup back to Utah

The only native of Utah to win the Stanley Cup twice, Los Angeles Kings forward Trevor Lewis brought it home again Wednesday.

"All my family and friends are here," Lewis told Good4Utah.com. "So there is no better place to bring it back to. I've seen all the support I had last time, and seeing it again is great."

More than 6,000 people were on hand at the state capitol in Salt Lake City, according to the Deseret News.

"It's crazy and unreal," Lewis told the newspaper.

The Cup arrived early in the morning and was greeted by Lewis, who chaperoned the trophy around town on a school bus draped in a celebratory flag.

A number of special guests stopped by, starting with Gov. Gary Herbert. Members of the front office of the ECHL Utah Grizzlies also showed up, as did the team's mascot, Grizzbee.

When Lewis won the Cup in 2012, he hosted a similar public event at the Grizzlies' home arena, the Maverick Center, before being honored at halftime of a University of Utah football game.

This time, Lewis and the Cup welcomed youth athletes from around the state and participated in a special presentation with the varsity hockey team from Viewmont High School, which last season won the school's first state championship in 36 years.

"Like Trevor said, it's something everyone dreams of that plays hockey," Viewmont captain Riggs Zeidler told Good4Utah.com. "So to be that close to it is an amazing experience."

With a number of youth hockey teams in attendance, the state, in conjunction with the Utah Sports Commission, declared the day Youth Hockey and Stanley Cup Day in Utah.

"He contacted me three or four weeks ago and said he wanted to put something together with the Stanley Cup coming to Utah," said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the commission. "On behalf of the governor, I read the declaration. Trevor did a great job. Having him do this in the community is really beneficial. We had a lot of youth hockey teams there. It was a celebration of Trevor and the Stanley Cup as well as hockey and sports fans in Utah."

Lewis had a series of private events scheduled with friends and family the rest of the day.
