Canada names team for Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup

Mathew Barzal, a potential first-round pick at the 2015 NHL Draft, was among the 22 players picked to play for Canada at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup.

The tournament will be played Aug. 11-16 in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia.

Canada has won the tournament the past six years and 18 times in the 23 times it's been held since 1991.

The roster was picked after a four-day selection camp in Calgary.

Barzal, a 5-11, 174-pound center, plays for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League. He tied for third among first-year WHL players last season with 40 assists and tied for fifth with 54 points.

Also named to the team was forward Travis Konecny of the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League. A 5-foot-10, 172-pound center who was the first pick of the 2013 OHL draft, Konecny led all first-year players in the league with 26 goals and 70 points in 2013-14.

"I am excited about the roster we have named," Canada coach Jody Hull said. "This was an intense, high-tempo camp, and there were some tough decisions to get down to the final 22 players. As a coaching staff, we're confident we've selected the best team to travel to Europe and continue Canada's great tradition at this event."

A few players with familiar names made the roster. Erie Otters forward Dylan Strome is the younger brother of New York Islanders forward Ryan Strome, and Red Deer Rebels forward Adam Musil is the son of former NHL player Frantisek Musil and the younger brother of Edmonton Oilers prospect David Musil.

All but one of the players named to the team are eligible for the 2015 draft except for goaltender Zachary Sawchenko, who is in the 2016 draft class.

Canada will be in Group B at the tournament, along with Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. Group A consists of the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and the United States.

Hull, who also coaches the Peterborough Petes of the OHL, will be assisted by Shaun Colston, coach of the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL, and Martin Raymond, coach of the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Quote of the Day

We think that Randy is a very good coach. Our players think that Randy is a very good coach. We think that he's going to get the most out of this group. With the addition of the two assistants, a bit of a different dynamic, we're very comfortable that this is a quality coaching staff that's going to maximize the potential of this team.
