Kings forward Richards brings Cup back to Kenora

Los Angeles Kings forward Mike Richards got to enjoy his second day with the Stanley Cup in the past three years Friday. As he did in 2012, he brought the most iconic trophy in sports to Kenora, Ontario for a quiet day on the lake.

Located about 124 miles east of Winnipeg in northwestern Ontario, Kenora saw hundreds of its citizens come out to again get up close with the Stanley Cup. Fans from around the region lined the streets as Richards led a modest parade through town.

"He's an amazing hockey player, he's from Kenora and he wins the Stanley Cup lots," young fan Mason Prefontaine told the Kenora Daily Miner and News.

Standing on the bed of a white pickup truck, Richards was driven alongside the Cup and the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, which the Kings received after defeating the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Final.

"It was amazing, there was such a sense of pride and community here," visiting fan Kim Thomas told the newspaper. "It was cool to see it that close up in person and so neat for him to actually be from Kenora and win it."

Richards also took the Cup out on his boat near his home for an afternoon of fishing with friends and family. As the sun began to set, Richards and the Cup hosted a private event on the M.S. Kenora, the local cruise ship that offers scenic tours along the waterfront.

The Stanley Cup's arrival highlighted an eventful weekend in Kenora, which was also hosting Habourfest, an annual series of weekend concerts headlined by former Poison front man Bret Michaels. The weekend also saw the annual Diamonds and Ice Tournament descend on Kenora. Now in its 20th year, the event hosts hockey and baseball tournaments featuring 18 hockey teams and 16 baseball teams.

Kings equipment manager Darren Granger brought the Cup to his hometown of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on Thursday.
