Drew Doughty set the Los Angeles Kings' record for most points by a defenseman in one playoff year when he scored a second-period goal against the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday at Staples Center.

It was Doughty's 17th point in 22 games this spring. He broke his own record of 16 points, set during the Kings' run to the Stanley Cup in 2012.

The goal was Doughty's fifth of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, one short of the franchise mark set by Jake Muzzin last spring.

Doughty's 17 points are the most among all NHL defenseman in this year's playoffs and are the most in one playoff year since Chris Pronger of the Philadelphia Flyers had 18 in 2010. Paul Coffey set the single-season record with 37 points during the Edmonton Oilers' run to the Cup in 1985.
