Rangers' Stepan ruled out of Game 4 vs. Canadiens

New York Rangers center Derek Stepan will not play in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday at Madison Square Garden (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS).

The Rangers lead the best-of-7 series 2-1.

Stepan was released from the hospital Saturday night and visited teammates Sunday morning before returning home. Coach Alain Vigneault said there is no timetable for his return.

Stepan had surgery Friday to repair a broken jaw sustained in Game 3 when Canadiens forward Brandon Prust hit him 2:45 into the first period. He has never missed a game in his four-year NHL career, a span of 348 regular-season and Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Prust was suspended two games by the NHL for the hit.

Stepan is tied for second on the Rangers in scoring in the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 11 points in 17 games.

Center Dominic Moore is expected to take Stepan's place on the Rangers' first line between Rick Nash and Chris Kreider, who skated Sunday morning after taking a maintenance day Saturday.

Center Derick Brassard is also likely to return and play between Benoit Pouliot and Mats Zuccarello. J.T. Miller is expected to skate with Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett on the fourth line.

Quote of the Day

That was something I've been dreaming of, something I've told myself before the third period I was going to do ... It was an amazing feeling. It's hard to describe. I didn't believe it went in at first but when I saw all the reaction and all the fans going crazy and my teammates going crazy, it's just an unbelievable feeling. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know whether to jump or just skate and do a Theo Fleury. I don't think I'm the same caliber player he is so I couldn't do it.
