After 'challenging year,' Alfredsson unsure of future

BOSTON -- Detroit Red Wings forward Daniel Alfredsson was non-committal about his future Saturday after losing Game 5 of the Eastern Conference First Round to the Boston Bruins, 4-2, at TD Garden.

The Bruins won the best-of-7 series, 4-1.

The 41-year-old forward returned to the Red Wings lineup for Game 5 after missing two games because of a back injury. He did not have a point in the Stanley Cup Playoff series.

"You take some time off here and just decompose everything, take everything in,” Alfredsson said after he was asked about next season. "There’s been a lot of new impressions obviously for me and my family, but overall we've had a fun, challenging year. We've all learned a lot, so I'll take some time and settle down, and start the process from there."

Alfredsson signed a one-year contract worth $3.5 million with Detroit after spending his entire career prior with the Ottawa Senators. He had 18 goals and 31 assists in 68 games for the Red Wings.

He said he enjoyed his first season in Detroit and if he plays another, he'd like it to be for the Red Wings.

"I think at the moment, if I come back, that's the likely scenario," he said.

Quote of the Day

We're buyers. We're committed to winning. That's what [owner Vinnie Viola] has said all along and what we've said all along. We want to win. We want to win a championship. We're putting the pieces together, step by step, and we're hopeful that Jaromir can lead these young guys to the promised land. It's a win-win for us.
