Blackhawks recall top prospect Teravainen

The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled forward Teuvo Teravainen from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs.

High hopes surround the 19-year-old prospect, but the Blackhawks announced he won't make his NHL debut Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes.

"There are so many good players on this team," Teravainen said. "I don't need to be Superman, just do my thing and help the team."

Teravainen, the Blackhawks' first-round selection (No. 18) in the 2012 NHL Draft, led Jokerit with 44 points (nine goals, 35 assists) in 49 games this season. He ranked seventh in SM-liiga in points and was second in assists, leading his club in assists and seventh in goals.

The Helsinki, Finland, native represented his country in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship, leading tournament scorers with 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) in seven games, helping Finland to a gold medal. Teravainen led the tournament in assists and a plus-11 rating and was named to the World Junior Championship All-Star Team.

"I think he got stronger and better defensively," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "I watched some of those World [Junior] Championship games, where he really looked like he was one of the top guys. He seemed to have the puck a lot, and I think his recognition offensively is really high-end. I think improving in his strength probably is another area that happened over the course of the year."

Teravainen adds a new element to the Blackhawks offense in the wake of an injury to forward Patrick Kane that will sideline him for the remainder of the regular season. Kane was placed on long-term injured reserve Friday to create space under the salary cap for the roster moves.

General manager Stan Bowman was asked if Kane would be ready for the first game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

"Right now there's no reason to think he won't," Bowman said.

Chicago called up forward Jeremy Morin from Rockford. Morin has one goal and five points in 15 games with the Blackhawks this season and has four goals and 10 points in 30 NHL games over parts of three seasons.

Morin, 22, ranks second on the IceHogs with 47 points (24 goals, 23 assists) in 47 games. He leads the team and shares seventh in the AHL in goals.
