Samuel Bennett named OHL player of the week

Kingston Frontenacs center Samuel Bennett, No. 1 on NHL Central Scouting's midterm list of the top draft eligible skaters from North America, was named the Ontario Hockey League player of the week on Monday.

Bennett, who had four goals, six points and a plus-3 rating in three games, helped the Frontenacs earn five of a possible six points in the standings. Kingston (34-22-5) currently holds the third seed in the OHL's Eastern Conference playoff race with 73 points.

Bennett, 17, is in his second OHL season with the Frontenacs, who selected him ninth in the 2012 OHL priority draft. He ranks third in league scoring with 90 points in 55 games. His 36 goals rank 10th in the league and his 10 power-play goals lead the team.

"Bennett has not only been very noticeable, but extremely effective every shift of every game so far this season," NHL Central Scouting's Chris Edwards said. "His puck handling and playmaking are excellent and he has one of the best shots in this year's draft class.

"He has scored several goals from the high slot and coming in off the wing and has been very effective on the power play."

Bennett, who owns a plus-34 rating this season, has 54 goals and 130 points in 115 career games with the Frontenacs. He had a league-high 25-game point streak (17 goals, 46 points) snapped on Jan. 30 in a 4-0 loss to the Windsor Spitfires.
