Kovalchuk not on ice for Russia's practice

SOCHI -- Russia's star forward, Ilya Kovalchuk, did not practice with the Russian team during a training session Monday afternoon at Bolshoy Ice Dome's training rink.

The Russians, who finished second in Group A, play Norway, the No. 12 seed, in a qualification game Tuesday (7:30 a.m. ET). The winner of that game advances to the quarterfinal stage on Wednesday and will play Finland, the fourth seed.

Kovalchuk was injured in the second period of the final preliminary game Sunday against Slovakia. He returned for the third period and also took part in the shootout, scoring a goal, as Russia won the game 1-0.

Kovalchuk was fighting for a puck with Slovakia forward Richard Panik in the Russian zone when the two fell awkwardly to the ice. Kovalchuk appeared to be in pain as he writhed on the ice for a few moments, but he was able to get up and limp toward the Russian bench under his own power.

Kovalchuk remained on the bench for a few minutes testing the leg and standing on it before leaving for the dressing room. However, he came out for the third period and played a regular shift.

"I'm fine," he said after the game.

More to come.
