"It's an honor," said Smyth, who won a gold medal with Canada at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. "It's truly an honor when you go compete for your country wearing that Maple Leaf or whatever it is in front of your chest. You want to represent your country with great pride. Taking two or three weeks away from the NHL season is obviously something, but it's important. It makes you a better player and it makes you a better person striving forward."
