Oilers' Scrivens talks record-setting night on NHL Live

Edmonton Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens joined NHL Live via telephone one night after stopping all 59 shots he faced in a 3-0 against the San Jose Sharks. Scrivens set a new record for the most saves in regular-season shutout during the expansion era, breaking the mark of 54 set by the Phoenix Coyotes' Mike Smith on April 3, 2012.

"I just felt like I could see the puck really well," Scrivens said. "Point shots were coming in through traffic, but I was seeing their releases and I was able to read the trajectory of the shots pretty well. They get two posts and shots I didn't see all that cleanly. They just found a way to hit and stick, and stay in high gear. There's definitely a degree of luck that goes along with a game like that."

What made Scrivens' performance more impressive was that it came against a Sharks team averaging 2.96 goals per game. San Jose has two of the top 16 goal-scorers in the League (Joe Pavelski, Patrick Marleau) and three players ranked among the top 21 in points (Joe Thornton, Pavelski and Marleau).

"They generate a lot of their offense by throwing pucks to the net and they've got guys who can work magic out of scrambles and pressure situations," Scrivens said. "I thought we did a good job of collapsing in front and if there was a second opportunity, there wasn't usually a third and a fourth. That's what you face when you play San Jose. They're an extremely gifted hockey club. We were very fortunate to come up with a win."
