Devils' Schneider frustrated by lack of playing time

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider couldn't hide his emotions when approached by the media after the morning skate Wednesday in preparation for the Carolina Hurricanes at Prudential Center.

Schneider was asked if he was surprised he wasn't starting.

"Yes, I'm surprised," Schneider said. "I'm frustrated."

Since making a season-high 34 saves in a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 21, Schneider hasn't gotten another chance. Martin Brodeur instead has gotten the call the past two games in losses to the San Jose Sharks on Saturday and Winnipeg Jets on Monday.

After returning from a groin injury Nov. 3, Schneider has made four starts (1-2-1) in 11 games. If he does get the nod Friday, he would have waited eight days before his next start.

"I'm trying to work hard and do what I can, but I'd just like to see the ice a little bit more is all," Schneider said. "Marty is playing really well. He's got the net and he's running with it. I know it's part of the game … it's just something where I just want to play more."

Schneider is 2-5-3 with a 1.87 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in 10 games. He's allowed one goal in each of his past three starts (1-1-1) and is fourth in the NHL in goals-against average.

"I think we knew with two starting goalies that we would be in situations where we were going to have to make tough decisions and this was one of them," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "Having said that, there's going to be plenty of games for both if you look at our schedule. We're in the middle of seven games in 11 nights and it doesn't get any easier in December.

"I'm comfortable [each goalie] will get plenty of opportunities to play."

Brodeur, who has lost two straight after winning five in a row, is 7-3-0 with two shutouts, a 1.51 GAA and .937 save percentage since Oct. 26.

DeBoer was asked if he needed to soothe the emotions of Schneider.

"That's your job every day, but you're not talking right to the guy," DeBoer said. "They're competitive, they want to play and are disappointed. I understand it. We have to make tough decisions."

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello had several updates to share prior to the morning skate. The team recalled defenseman Seth Helgeson, a 2009 fourth-round pick (No. 114), with Adam Larsson (lower body) and Bryce Salvador (foot) sidelined. Salvador and Ryane Clowe (head) have begun skating on their own but there is no timetable for a return.

Lamoriello acknowledged Larsson is not skating but his layoff "shouldn't be that long." Forward Stephen Gionta (ankle) was placed on injured reserve.

Here are the expected lineups:
