Red Wings' Eaves clears waivers, assigned to AHL

The Detroit Red Wings announced Friday on Twitter that forward Patrick Eaves has cleared waivers and will be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Eaves was waived Thursday in an effort to provide cap relief.

Eaves was in his fifth season in Detroit after stints with the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes. The Red Wings also sent forward Jordin Tootoo to the AHL this week.

After starting the season with an injury, Eaves has only played in three games in 2013-14, collecting no points and averaging less than 10 minutes of ice time per game.

"Patty is a good player and a real good person. He does everything right," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said Thursday. "We haven't been able to give him an opportunity to play enough and he wants to be in the lineup every night. He should be, he's a good enough player. It's disappointing we haven't been able to make it work. He's a good player."

In 417 career NHL games, Eaves has 72 goals and 141 points.
