Moncton's Barbashev to lead Russia at Super Series

Ivan Barbashev, a top prospect for the 2014 NHL Draft, was named to Russia's roster for the 2013 Subway Super Series games.

Russia will play six games across Canada -- two each against all-star teams from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League.

The Super Series games are part of the decision-making process toward picking the team that will represent Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden. That tournament runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, 2014.

Super Series schedule

Game 1 – Mon. Nov. 18 at Gatineau, Quebec
Game 2 – Wed. Nov. 20 at Sherbrooke, Quebec
Game 3 – Thurs. Nov. 21 at Oshawa, Ontario
Game 4 – Mon. Nov. 25 at Sudbury, Ontario
Game 5 – Wed. Nov. 27 at Red Deer, Alberta
Game 6 – Thurs. Nov. 28 at Lethbridge, Alberta

QMJHL fans certainly know about Barbashev, who plays for the Moncton Wildcats. A 6-foot-1, 185-pound left wing, Barbashev is tied for ninth in the QMJHL with 29 points in 20 games. His 19 assists lead Moncton and he also has 10 goals.

Barbashev was the lone QMJHL skater to earn an "A" rating from NHL Central Scouting in its preliminary players to watch list of the top prospects for the 2014 draft.

He also is one of 10 Russian skaters already playing in North America

Twenty-eight of the 32 players picked for Russia are eligible for the 2014 draft. Among them is left wing Vladimir Tkachyov, who plays for Omsk in the Kontinental Hockey League. The 5-9, 146-pound left wing has played two games for Omsk this season and earned a "B" rating from Central Scouting.

Three of the players have been drafted by NHL teams, among them Valentin Zykov, a left wing selected in the second round (No. 37) of the 2013 draft and currently playing with the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the QMJHL.

Mikhail Varnakov, who has spent the past two seasons coaching in Russia's top minor league, will coach Russia. Igor Averkin and Vladislav Krutskih will be his assistant coaches.
