Tyutin out for Blue Jackets' opener

Columbus Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards told reporters following the team's morning skate Friday that veteran defenseman Fedor Tyutin would not be available for the team's season opener at home against the Calgary Flames on Friday.

Tyutin has been out since sustaining a lower-body injury during practice Wednesday. David Savard will fill Tyutin's spot in the lineup and will skate alongside Nikita Nikitin.

Richards said the choice for Tyutin's replacement ultimately came down to Savard or Tim Erixon, the 22-year-old acquired last season from the New York Rangers in the trade that sent Rick Nash to New York.

In the end, Savard won out.

"We all felt as a coaching staff that David had a better camp than Tim did," Richards said. "It looks like he invested over the summer, as far as his training. I think he dropped some weight, which is something he needed to do to make him a little quicker on the ice. This is going to be a good test for him."

Tyutin's status remains undetermined for the team's upcoming two-game road trip, to play the New York Islanders on Saturday and the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. Richards said he has not yet decided on whether Tyutin would accompany the team on the trip.
