New York Rangers' captain Ryan Callahan has been cleared for contact but won't be ready for opening night, according to coach Alain Vigneault.
"Cally took contact this morning at practice, has been cleared for contact, and that's the final step in coming back," Vigneault said after New York's 5-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
Callahan is coming back from offseason shoulder surgery, as is forward Carl Hagelin. Callahan is with the team, which wraps up its preseason schedule Friday night against the Los Angeles Kings in Las Vegas. Hagelin, who is not as far along toward returning, was sent back to New York earlier in the week.
Though he's been cleared for contact, Callahan won't be ready when the Rangers open their season against the Phoenix Coyotes in Glendale, Ariz., on Oct. 3. "No, no, no," Vigneault said when asked if Callahan's return to practice meant he might be ready for the opener.
