Red Wings return first-round pick to junior team

The Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday returned Anthony Mantha, their first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, to his junior team, the Val D'Or Foreurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Mantha, who scored 50 goals for Val D'Or last season, played in one preseason game for Detroit.

The Red Wings also sent forward Andres Athanasiou and defenseman Mark McNulty back to their junior teams. Athanasiou was returned to Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League; McNulty returned to Prince George of the Western Hockey League.

Detroit also released forward Barclay Goodrow from his tryout contract.

The Red Wings have 55 players remaining in camp.

Quote of the Day

I'm just excited about the opportunity. I've been on the ice earlier than usual and in the weight room, pushing around a little more weights than usual. Every day I go into a workout with a smile on my face and ready to go. When you do have a little more responsibility, you want to take your lunch pail and get ready to work.
