Lightning release three from amateur tryout deals

The Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday trimmed their training camp roster to 59 players as they released three players in camp on amateur tryouts.

Those let go were forward Brett Welychka, defenseman Jake Dotchin and goaltender Eric Brassard.

Brassard likely will play for the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season.

Tampa Bay also signed 21-year-old forward Joel Vermin to a three-year, entry-level contract. The Lightning selected the Swiss native in the seventh round (No. 186) of the 2013 NHL Draft. Vermin had 13 goals and 35 points in 47 games with Bern of the Swiss A-League last season.

Quote of the Day

You don't see many. The [Drew] Doughtys, the [P.K.] Subbans, those are guys that create offense from the back and then on top of that ability, the size that he has. In the West you play against some pretty big players, and being able to clear the crease and contain the [Ryan] Getzlafs and the [Corey] Perrys and [Anze] Kopitars and players like that, we're excited about him going back there.
