Flyers sign 2013 first-round pick Morin

The Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday signed 2013 first-round pick Samuel Morin to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The 6-foot-6, 202-pound defenseman, taken with the 11th pick in the draft, could make as much as $1.425 million per season, including bonuses.

"For a guy that size, I think he gets around the ice really good," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "His hands are good; his sense is really good. We'll just take it a day at a time."

Morin had an assist while playing 23:14 in a preseason game Monday against the Washington Capitals and has been impressive during training camp.

"He's getting better and better every day," Flyers player development director Ian Laperriere told the Flyers website. "He wants to learn. He asks the right questions every day and we're really happy with him. He knows who he is and what he can do, and the sky's the limit for a kid like that."

The Flyers entered training camp with nine defensemen on one-way contracts, plus veteran Hal Gill, who is attending training camp on a professional tryout.

"Any time [Morin] can spend here is a bonus, to learn from guys, learn what it takes to be a pro," Homgren said. "When the time comes to make our decision, we'll make it."
