Bergeron, Campbell not 100 percent for Bruins

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins’ depth up the middle might be tested at the start of training camp as veteran centers Patrice Bergeron and Gregory Campbell continue to recover from injuries incurred during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Bergeron famously played through a broken rib, injured rib cartilage, punctured lung and separated shoulder in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Chicago Blackhawks. Just as famously, Campbell broke his leg in the Eastern Conference Final against the Pittsburgh Penguins and had to have surgery.

Both players took their physical exams and went through off-ice testing with their teammates at TD Garden on Wednesday. Also, both might be limited when on-ice sessions start Thursday.

"They’re going to practice with us, they're going to be on the ice, and I think when it comes time to play those exhibition games, it'll obviously be a conversation again with our trainers and making sure that if they're going to play there's not a risk factor," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "So right now I'll tell you that they would not be cleared to play a game if we started today. But that might change in the coming days or in a week from now."

The Bruins' first preseason game is Monday against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre.

Bergeron said the only hindrance he has right now is some tenderness in his rib cage. He gauged his health at 95 percent.

"Honestly, if I feel fine in the first couple practices and I feel like I can kind of bang around and play physical in the 1-on-1s and stuff like that on the ice, I pretty much feel like I'll be ready to get going and move forward," he said. "So I guess the next couple days will tell where I stand with lingering issues, I guess."

In the days before camp opened, Campbell joined many of his teammates for informal skating sessions. He said he still was getting comfortable with a re-worked boot on his repaired leg and trying to find his skating legs.
