Senators in no rush to name new captain

The Ottawa Senators have an opening for the team captaincy, but coach Paul MacLean said there's no rush to fill it.

Talking with reporters in Ottawa on Wednesday on the first day of training camp, MacLean said "we're not making a decision" on the new captain at this time.

"I want to do it at the right time," MacLean said. "I want to make sure I do it at the right time."

Daniel Alfredsson had been captain since the start of the 1999-2000 season, but that ended when he signed with the Detroit Red Wings in July.

In Alfredsson's place, MacLean the team's leadership group will consist of goaltender Craig Anderson, defensemen Chris Phillips and Marc Methot, and forwards Jason Spezza and Chris Neil. The coach added the four non-goaltenders will be under consideration for the captaincy.

Spezza told NHL.com during the Player Media Tour in New York last week that he was ready for the role, if the team agreed.

"I think I've really grown in a leadership role and I'd be honored to be the captain," he said. "We have some guys on the team that could also be captain of our team, but I'd love the opportunity to be captain and I feel like I'm ready to be captain of a hockey club. But you don't get those pick those things, you don't decide on your own."
