Sweden blanks United States 4-0

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- A scoreless third period brought to an end a 4-0 win for Sweden against the United States.

It was a disappointing for the U.S. in its first game with a cut-down squad.

The Americans had three power plays in the third period, but rarely was able to create any quality scoring chances.

Jon Gillies, who started in goal for the U.S., finished with 19 saves on 22 shots; Thatcher Demko stopped 16 of 17 shots.

For Sweden, Marcus Hogberg stopped all 27 United States shots.

Back with more from both locker rooms.

Quote of the Day

The groove of being behind a bench is going to be interesting at first, but thank God we have a few exhibition games to get rid of those cobwebs. Overall the excitement of it all and the freshness and coming back refreshed, all those things are going to be assets. If [the players] come ready to give their best effort in practice and games, good things are going to happen. I'm always looking for results. It's not always on the scoreboard. It's winning and building something.
